Kaitaunaki: Whānau Support and Advocate

Kaitaunaki: Whānau Support and Advocate (0.6FTE, Work from home anywhere in Aotearoa)

Are you passionate about supporting whānau and making a meaningful difference in the lives of tamariki and rangatahi living with grandparent and whānau carers?

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) is seeking a Kaitaunaki (Whānau Support and Advocate) to join our team in a flexible, remote (work from home) 0.6 FTE role, supporting caregivers across Aotearoa. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a kaupapa-driven organisation committed to strengthening grandparent and whānau carers, and uplifting some of our most vulnerable communities.

About Us

At GRG, our vision is to see resilient and healthy tamariki and rangatahi, supported by empowered grandparents and whānau caregivers.

Our mahi is grounded in values of:

  • Children are our taonga – Children are precious and their caregivers are the guardians of their future.
  • Whakapapa and Whanaungatanga – We embrace the need for people to be connected and belong to their family or whānau through the concepts of whakapapa and whanaungatanga.
  • Ako - Learning from each other - We value ako; the exchange of learning from one another and enriching each other's lives.
  • Pono – Respect and integrity – We honour the Treaty of Waitangi and work with honesty, respect, and integrity towards people of all ethnicities and cultural backgrounds.

About the Role

This is a frontline support and advocacy role where you will work directly with grandparent and whānau caregivers, providing culturally responsive, trauma-informed support.

Working primarily via phone and digital platforms (with occasional travel), you will:

  • Provide first-response support and case management
  • Advocate for whānau, including supporting access to entitlements and services
  • Build strong relationships with iwi, community organisations, and sector partners (e.g. MSD, Oranga Tamariki)
  • Strengthen local and national support networks
  • Contribute to GRG’s advocacy and policy insights
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to reporting

This role requires someone who is confident working independently while staying connected to a national team.

What You’ll Bring

We are looking for someone who brings both professional capability and heart to this mahi.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience in social services, care and protection, or community work
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and systems (e.g. MSD, Oranga Tamariki)
  • Strong advocacy, relationship-building, and communication skills
  • Cultural competence and commitment to Tikanga Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • The ability to provide empathetic, mana-enhancing support to whānau
  • Excellent organisation and case management skills

You’ll also be:

  • Resilient, reflective, and able to navigate complex situations
  • A strong communicator who builds trust easily
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working remotely

Additional Requirements

  • Full, clean driver’s licence and access to a vehicle
  • Willingness to travel occasionally
  • Ability to work flexibly in a remote environment
  • Eligibility to work in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Criminal history check required

Why Join GRG?

  • Be part of a purpose-driven organisation making real impact
  • Flexible, family-friendly work-from-home environment
  • Opportunity to contribute to national change and advocacy
  • Work alongside a dedicated, values-led team
  • Competitive remuneration
  • Here’s what one of our Kaitaunaki said about joining GRG:

“It was important to me to work for an organisation that has a strong strategic direction focused on making meaningful changes across our community.  It is a real privilege and extremely rewarding knowing that our work makes a real difference in peoples lives.”
