When to Apply

You can only receive one grant for each child in each financial year (1 July – 30 June). If you submit an application before the closing date of a funding round, it will be considered in that round. If you miss the closing date, it will be considered in the next round.

About the Extraordinary Care Fund

If you are in receipt of the Unsupported Child Benefit or Orphan’s Benefit for the support of a child in your care, you may apply to the Extraordinary Care Fund for funding to help the child reach their potential.

The ECF is a grant of up to $2,000, designed to support children who are:

  • experiencing difficulties that are significantly impacting on their development
  • showing promise in a particular area

Applications can be made for up to $2,000 in each financial year (1 July to 30 June)

If the cost is over $2,000 you'll have to show how you're going to pay the extra.

If you're caring for more than one child, you can apply for a grant for each child.

Grants that are awarded are based on the needs of the child rather than their family’s financial situation.

The fund DOES NOT cover:

  • costs that are covered by other agencies or the Establishment Grant or the School and Year Start-up Payment.
  • health and medical costs (e.g treatment or medication) but it does cover orthodontic or dental work
  • everyday costs (e.g school trips, vehicles, legal costs)
  • overseas travel

How to apply

  1. Read our Extraordinary Fund Guidelines or Download them in PDF format here.
  2. Download the ECF Application form here
  3. Print it out and complete the application form
  4. Gather together all supporting documentation required
  5. Book an appointment with your local Work and Income office as soon as possible to submit your application.
  6. Decisions are made within 5 weeks of the close of the funding round.

Important! Make sure you read all of the information contained on the Work and Income website about what is and is not covered and what supporting information is required to be submitted with your application.
