Relating

heart with reflection poem-735

At some point in your caregiver journey you will find yourself pausing for a moment, pinching yourself and reflecting on the enormity of your role as caregiver to your grandchild or whanau child.

You've navigated your way through the initial shock, anguish, disappointment and heartache not to mention working out your rights under the law and what financial support might be available.  You've made sure the basics are sorted, but it doesn't end there!

The child or children in your care will all have their own back story and unique needs.  Whether they have disabilities or talents they are individual souls counting on you for their survival and support to realise their true potential in life.

You are their heroes in this world and remember - you are special and what you do for these children is beyond compare.

At this stage in your journey as life settles into a new rhythm, if it hasn't already, you will become acutely aware of the differences in their world to how it was when you were growing up at their age or even when raising your own children.

Relating to their world can present its own challenges and issues.

In this part of our GRG Roadmap and guide we offer the following ideas and suggestions to help you relate to your grandchild and their world.

Our GRG Handbook contains a wealth of information, advice and tips to help you on your journey.

If you are not yet a member of GRG join here now and you will receive our new member resource pack which includes a hard-copy version of this invaluable handbook. Membership is free.

The best time used to be when he went to bed and I could relax.  Now it is a joy to sit at the dinner table enjoying animated intelligent conversation with grandson and friends knowing that however difficult it has been, I have done a splendid job raising an amazing kid, who despite his rough start in life has grown into an even more amazing young man." GRG Member
